Gospel	Matthew 14:22-33	Jesus walks on the water.

REFLECTION

Elijah encounters God in an awesome place, the scraped, barren, rocky mountain of Horeb. It took a light, murmuring sound was, to encourage and strengthen him to continue his God given mission. Paul asks himself why Israel, the Chosen People, prepared for so many years to welcome the Messiah, failed to accept Jesus, failed to recognise God in Jesus. Paul concludes that the repeated rebellions by Israel against God, hold the answer. Matthew sets the scene of the Apostles trying cross Sea of Galilee, finding themselves in extreme danger, in another, awesome place, a storm-tossed fishing boat, in the dark of night, out of sight of shore. Then, there, they encounter Jesus, God, walking across the waves towards them. Peter shows willing but is lacking in faith. However, Jesus chose these fishermen, for their patience, used to hard physical labour, trusting their lives to their friends. Not quite prepared enough, then, they had yet to learn to trust Jesus fully.                                                                                                         What does it say about us?  Remember, He chose us too.                                                                                                                                                                                      How has lack of trust in God’s plan for you, caused you to stumble and falter, and thus fail to experience His calming presence?

THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY  

Tuesday of this week will mark the great feast, and Holiday of Obligation of the Assumption of our Blessed Lady. Vigil Mass at 6:00 pm in St Maria Goretti’s, Cranhill on the evening of Monday 14^th August 2023. Morning mass at 9:30 am will be held here, St Jude & St John Ogilvie, on Tuesday 15^th August 2023.                                                                The gospels, both vigil and day, emphasise the honour rightly given to Mary, as Mother of God. As Jesus’ first and ultimate disciple, Mary started from treasuring Jesus in her womb, caring for her expecting cousin Elizabeth, grew as a mother, gave birth, raised Jesus as her son, and in her prayer life always pondered his word in her heart. His lowest servant, Mary was highly honoured, raised up on high, and is now known as Mother of the Church where she intercedes for all of us.

2023 DIOCESAN MARRIAGE PREPARATION DAYS                                                          
The next preparation day for those approaching matrimony will be held soon, next month, on Saturday 16^th September 2023 at St Dominic’s, Bishopbriggs. For the coming year, both preparation days will be held in Christ the King, King’s Park, the first on Saturday 24^th February 2024, and the second on Saturday 1^st June 2024. 

MARY’S MEALS – DON’T FORGET YOUR DIRECT DEBITS ARE TRIPLED FOR THREE MONTHS.                                                                                                  Donate by 29^th September 2023 by Direct Debit, and generous sponsors have agreed to triple the first three donations you make, thus feeding even more hungry children.  Mary’s Meals began by feeding 200 hungry children in a school in Malawi in 2002. THE LISTENING HEART IN THE EAST END?                                                                                                A wee reminder that the Sisters of Charity have opened a Drop-In Centre, housed in a property opposite St Michael’s Parkhead, on the Gallowgate. Called ‘Listening Heart’.  The Centre is open every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10:30am – 2:30pm. Please feel free to Step in and have a Cuppa and a Chat.                                                                                 

RCAG YOUTH: WORLD YOUTH DAY IN LISBON

Let us remember, in our prayers, the youth who gathered from all over the world. May they be blessed, awakened, and invigorated by their spiritual and communal experiences in Lisbon as they walk back into the world, to celebrate and share the Good News. They worked hard, prayed hard, worshipped hard, and occasionally slept. The Facebook sites of various diocese ably kept us informed of the many things which were happening, as did the Sancta Familia team. With thanks we witnessed the unstinting efforts of our Holy Father, Pope Francis himself, backed by our bishops, clergy, religious and helpers, making this a truly holy week:  1^st to 8^th August 2023.   www.walkwithustolisbon.co.uk
