CELEBRATION OF THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION
GOD’S WORD FOR US TODAY
Reading 1: Gen 14: 18-20 (He brought bread and wine)
Melchizedek, the priest-king of Jerusalem, brings bread and wine as a thanksgiving offering to God for his assistance to Abraham, a kind of foreshadowing of the Eucharist.
Resp. Ps. (109): You are a priest forever, a priest like Melchizedek of old.
Reading 2: 1 Cor 11: 23-25 (Every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death)
This is the earliest account that we have of the institution of the Eucharist. Jesus’ words over the bread inform us that his body is ‘for you’. Jesus gave his life for each one of us.
Gospel Acc: Alleluia . . . . . I am the living bread which has come down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live for evermore. Alleluia . . . .
Gospel : Lk 9: 11-17 (The feeding of the five thousand)
Jesus tells the disciples to feed the 5,000, and they are confused. How can they do this with only a few loaves a two fish? So, Jesus blesses what they bring him and the disciples are then able to do exactly as he asked. In the same way Jesus blesses the bread and wine at Mass, and through his power we too are able to meet the needs of those who are hungry in any way.

CORPUS CHRISTI: EVENING PRAYER
At 7:00 pm this evening, June 19th, there will be sung Evening Prayer in the Cathedral, during which the Diocesan Synodality Report will be presented to the Archbishop. All are welcome. See poster in the porch.
BISHOPS’ PASTORAL LETTER
The Bishops of Scotland have written a pastoral letter on the Eucharist which expresses our communion with Christ and with one another in Christ. We were prevented from celebrating the Eucharist together during the Covid-19 lockdown. With restrictions lifted, we can now gather physically to celebrate our community identity as the Body of Christ and be strengthened by that celebration. The Pastoral Letter is on the notice board, and there are a few copies at the back of Church for those who wish to read it at home.
PETER’S PENCE CONNECTION (June 26th)
Each week parishioners support the needs and work of the parish through the Sunday collection. Three times a year, parishes throughout the world support the central administration of the Church and the Pope’s charitable projects:
- Good Friday: for the Church in the Holy Land;
- Sunday nearest to June 29th, the Feast of St Peter and Paul: Peter’s Pence Collection, to support the Vatican and its works, and the Pope’s charitable projects;
- Second last Sunday in October, World Mission Day: supports the Church’s worldwide missionary work.
These collections express our solidarity as Christians, wherever we are, and our desire to serve the most needy in society. The 2022 Peter’s Pence collection will be taken next Sunday. Thank you for your generosity.
WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES (WMOF)
The WMOF, started by Pope John Paul II in 1994, will take place in Rome, June 26-29, 2022. The purpose of these meetings is to celebrate God’s plan for marriage and family life. The theme of this year’s meeting is “Family Love: A Vocation and Pathway to Holiness.” Pope Francis invites couples and families to attend Mass together next Sunday, June 26th, and he invites the whole Church to pray for couples and families during that week, that God will strengthen them in their vocation. There will be a prayer in next week’s bulletin.

CONFIRMATION CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to the children who celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation today. We welcome them into full membership of the Church and of our parish. We continue to pray for them and their families.
THE SICK AND DECEASED
We pray for the sick, that God will grant them strength and peace, and for those who have died, that God will bring them to the fullness of eternal life. We remember in particular Mary Lamont who died recently and Alex White whose anniversary occurs this week, June 24th.
PRAYER for PEACE: RUSSIA and UKRAINE
O Prince of Peace, once more we hear the guns of war and see the faces of frightened children. We pray for the people of Ukraine, that they may be granted peace; for the people of Russia, that they may demand peace; and for our own country, that we may be a positive part of peace-making in this world. O Prince of Peace, lead us from this dark time to a deeper understanding of the global human family, so that all may break bread together in the secure embrace of peace. Amen.
