CHRIST IS RISEN: HAPPY EASTER
GOD’S WORD FOR US TODAY
Reading 1: Acts 10:34, 37-43 (We are witnesses to him – we have eaten with him after his resurrection)
Peter, who had denied Jesus, is now transformed by the experience of the resurrection and is fearlessly proclaiming God’s work in Jesus.
Reading 2: Col 3:1-4 (Let your thoughts be on heavenly things)
The resurrection of Jesus is an anticipation of our resurrection. In him we are already raised and at one with God. In this reading Paul invites us to live as risen people and to keep our focus on heaven.
Gospel : John 20: 1-9 (He must rise from the dead)
Though Jesus had talked about his rising from the dead, the disciples who went to the tomb were clearly not expecting to find it empty. Mary of Magdala thinks the body has been removed. Peter sees the signs but doesn’t quite get the message. The beloved disciple, who was very close to Jesus, sees the same signs and believes that Jesus had risen, without the need to see him. That beloved disciple represents each one of us: we believe without seeing. Reflect: Go to the empty tomb with the disciples. What do you feel and think when you discover that the tomb is empty, yet the grave cloths are exactly where the body was laid?

EASTERTIDE
TODAY, Easter Sunday, we begin the 50-day celebration of Jesus’ resurrection.
JESUS APPEARED to his disciples intermittently for forty days after his resurrection, and then he returned to his Father – the Feast of the Ascension. Just before his Ascension he told his disciples to stay in Jerusalem and pray for the gift of the Holy Spirit which they received 10 days later at Pentecost. The disciples were transformed by the gift of the Holy Spirit: they were no longer afraid and so they began to proclaim Jesus publicly. Many people were baptised and the Church was born.
EACH SUNDAY throughout these 50 days we will hear the story of the infant Church in the First Reading from the Acts of the Apostles: where the apostles went, how the people organised their lives so as to imitate Jesus, the difficulties they met and how they addressed these.
AS THE CHURCH SPREAD throughout the Roman Empire, Paul and others encouraged these infant communities by letter writing, and we will hear their letters in the Second Reading. In the Gospel, we will initially be with the disciples as they meet Jesus after the resurrection, and then we will hear Jesus’ teaching on what it means to be his follower.
THIS IS AN EXCITING TIME in the life of the Church. Early Christians had difficulties just like ourselves. It’s interesting to hear their situations and to reflect on how these might help us.

Thank you to all who took part in the Stations of the Cross during Lent and walked again with Jesus as he continues to suffer in everyone who suffers in today’s world.
PRAYER for PEACE
O Prince of Peace, once more we hear the guns of war and see the faces of frightened children. We pray for the people of Ukraine, that they may be granted peace; for the people of Russia, that they may demand peace; and for our own country, that we may be a positive part of peace-making in this world. O Prince of Peace, lead us from this dark time to a deeper understanding of the global human family, so that all may break bread together in the secure embrace of peace. Amen.
THE SICK and DECEASED
We continue to pray for the sick members of our parish that God will grant them strength and peace; and for those who have died and those whose anniversaries occur at this time, that God will bring them to the fullness of eternal life.
WELCOME BACK to SCHOOL
We hope that the children and their families have enjoyed their two weeks of holiday and that the children are now excited about going back to school and meeting all their friends again.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word will resume next Sunday, April 24th. We look forward to seeing all the children again as they explore together the stories of Jesus meeting his friends again after the Resurrection.

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
Today, April 17th, is Divine Mercy Sunday. St Brendan’s Parish is hosting an afternoon of prayer to mark the special day. It will include:

RIGHT TO LIFE, UK
This week’s prayer for recognition of the dignity of all human life and for its protection is as follows: As we celebrate the ultimate victory that Christ won for us on the cross, we pray for victory in all the church’s efforts. We pray especially for the church’s battle to promote the dignity and protect the wellbeing of all human beings, from conception to natural death. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our Risen Lord. Amen.
